'My Body, My Art'

Saturday 21 August to Friday 27 August at 11am to 6pm
The Community Pharmacy Gallery

16 Market Place, Margate Old Town, CT9 1ES

** Free**

Last year we invited the public to come and share the history of tattoo and in turn, their body art.

Over the weekend of the 22 to 23 August 2009, professional photographer Marie Muscat-King, took over 800 photographs of local residents and visitors tattoos.

People kindly shared with us the reasons why they have had their tattoos and what they meant to them.

In March of this year, we bought all the images together to create a new exhibition entitled ‘My Body, My Art’.  We hung the photographs in a gallery setting.  This way, the audience can stop and really look at the ‘artwork’, which is sometimes hard to do when catching sight of a tattoo, especially on a stranger!

Due to your fantastic response and our continued interest in this art-form, we are now pleased to exhibit this work and we warmly welcome you to linger, take a seat and view this very intimate art.

We look forward to seeing you there.

'The Margate Mermaids'

Saturday 21 August to Monday 30 August 11am to 5pm

Harbour Arm Gallery

Margate Harbour Arm, Margate, Kent

** Free**

We ask you for one weekend only, to set aside your modern views of beauty pageants.

A volume of historical local and national newspaper cuttings from the 1940s/50s, goes on public display for the first time. The cuttings celebrate Margate's destination as 'the place' to be, where the nicest young lady would show a pair of beautiful 'turned' ankles and pose with her friends for the camera.

Set in an era of innocence, mass bathing at 'The Lido' and highly competitive 'parades', we celebrate the gorgeous women (and men) that are the centrepiece of this exhibition and who would wear a mermaid tail with pride!

If you are featured in any of the articles in the exhibition, we would love to hear from you.

The original press cuttings have been kindly supplied by the Dreamland Archive Project.
